Megawatt Winged Avenger formed on a cold and windy night in the autumn of 2005 out of the ashes of local bands Knee Deep and Forty7three. What had started as a just-for-fun side project became a full frontal assault on York and the surrounding area.
“If ignorance is bliss then we must be bliss” said lead guitarist Rosco surveying the stage packed with speakers, drums, wires and amplifiers. How we managed to fit it all in the ford "tardis" van in the first place is a complete mystery .
The music will appeal to fans of Metallica, Guns n Roses, Alter Bridge, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden.... basically anyone who likes loud music they can bang their head and sing along to! Megawatt are a band that firmly believe that playing live should be as much about the entertainment as it is the music. Bands and audience should be able to have a laugh together at a show and have a good time.
“They gave us a classic metal set complete with posing, gurning, big solos, and cheeky banter.” – York, The Talk Magazine – October 2006 Issue.
After a busy summer of gigs MWA are now beavering away recording a new demo. The first couple of sessions have been very promising. The new demo will contain four slabs of vintage Megawatt. The familiar anthem "I Never", the epic and haunting "Dioscorus", galloping 80's thrash of "Air" and the latest creation, the grinding, tortured thunder of "Leave Me Tonight". The demo should be early in 2007 on the website and for free at gigs.
“The audience at the New Inn wouldn¹t let these guys go home, but after 3 hours and 3 encores they were as knackered as a Scarborough dentist.” – Bill Harding, Scarborough, Up for It magazine
In december the band became a five piece when lead singer 'Tupps' decided he wanted to concentrate solely on vocal performance. The decision was supported by the rest of the band and after some discussion Ash "Tower of Metal" Wilkinson was invited to become the 5th member. The rest... (cheese moment).. is history....
